Program Description

Discover the fascinating world hidden beneath the surface of Iceland with a visit to Raufarhólshellir Lava Tunnel – one of the longest and most famous lava tubes on the island. This extraordinary excursion offers the opportunity to step inside an ancient volcanic passage and learn about the powerful forces that shaped Iceland’s unique landscape thousands of years ago.

After departing from Reykjavík, you will travel to Raufarhólshellir, located just around 30 minutes from the capital. Accompanied by an experienced guide, you will venture deep into this impressive lava cave, where you will see remarkable traces of volcanic activity preserved in their natural state.

As you walk through the underground passages, you will admire spectacular rock formations created by flowing lava and learn about the eruption that formed this extraordinary tunnel around 5,200 years ago. Your guide will explain how lava tubes are created and provide fascinating insights into the volcanic processes that continue to shape Iceland today.

One of the highlights of the excursion is the opportunity to see the natural ice formations that develop near the entrance to the tunnel during the winter months. The striking contrast between the solidified lava and the shimmering blue ice creates a truly unique landscape found only in Iceland’s volcanic environment.

This is a rare opportunity to explore the interior of an ancient lava tube and gain a deeper understanding of the natural forces that continue to shape Iceland. Available throughout the year, this excursion is an excellent choice for geology enthusiasts, nature lovers and anyone looking to experience one of Iceland’s most remarkable natural wonders.
