Program Description
This experience combines two unique Amsterdam attractions - ARTIS Amsterdam Royal Zoo and Micropia. At one of the world's oldest zoos, you will discover a remarkable variety of animals and plants before stepping into the microscopic world of organisms that cannot be seen with the naked eye.
Founded in 1838, ARTIS Amsterdam Royal Zoo is one of the world's five historic zoos. Covering more than 10 hectares, it is home to around 700 animal species, including Asian elephants, African penguins, reticulated giraffes and jaguars. Visit the renovated Kerbert Terrace, a former lion enclosure where you can now see ring-tailed lemurs, red ruffed lemurs and Madagascar radiated tortoises.
ARTIS offers much more than encounters with animals. As you explore the park, you will discover historic buildings and a botanical garden filled with rare trees and exotic plants. You can also visit the ARTIS Aquarium to see coral reefs, sea creatures and aquatic life from Amsterdam's canals.
Your visit also includes access to the ARTIS Planetarium, where you can learn more about stars, planets and water in the Solar System. Throughout the day, you can attend zookeeper talks about animals including jaguars, gorillas and Asian elephants, while complimentary guided tours are available at weekends. Younger visitors can also enjoy educational activities and play areas.
From 3 October, you can also experience “Deep seeing currents” at the ARTIS Aquarium - a permanent installation by Olafur Eliasson. Combining darkness, ocean sounds, vibrations and light, the installation offers a different perspective on the underwater world.
The second part of your visit takes you to ARTIS-Micropia - the world's first and only museum dedicated entirely to microbes. You will see live microbes through microscopes and explore interactive installations that reveal the invisible world all around us. At the Water Lab, you can examine microbes found in water from three different environments - a farm ditch, the sea and Amsterdam's canals.
Combining ARTIS Amsterdam Royal Zoo and Micropia gives you the chance to discover nature on completely different scales - from large animals and exotic plants to microscopic forms of life.
