Program Description
Microorganisms are with you every day, even though they remain invisible to the naked eye. At ARTIS-Micropia in Amsterdam, you will discover just how much they influence humans and the way our planet functions. It is the first and only museum in the world dedicated entirely to microorganisms, where microscopes and interactive installations reveal a world that normally remains hidden from view.
The museum is located right next to ARTIS-Park, around 10 minutes from the centre of Amsterdam, making it easy to combine your visit with exploring other attractions in the city. You will discover microorganisms found in the air, on our skin and in the digestive system, and learn about the important role they play in everyday life.
During your visit, you will see living microorganisms, look through microscopes and explore interactive installations that help you understand the microscopic world. You will find out how microorganisms are used in food production, support human health and contribute to natural processes within ecosystems. You will also discover stories about laboratory work and the study of organisms that we cannot normally see with the naked eye.
One of the highlights of your visit is the Water Lab. Here, you will find three aquariums containing water from different environments - a farm ditch, the sea and Amsterdam's canals. Using microscopes, you can take a closer look at the microorganisms living in each sample and compare the variety of microscopic life found in these different aquatic environments.
A visit to ARTIS-Micropia will give you a completely different perspective on the world around you. It is an opportunity to better understand the importance of microorganisms and discover just how many everyday processes depend on them.

- Pets are not permitted. Assistance dogs are welcome, but must be registered at the ticket office upon arrival. Please remember to bring your dog's training identification card.
