Program Description

Casa Milà, also known as La Pedrera, is a work by Antoni Gaudí and an important example of Catalan Modernisme. The building was constructed between 1905 and 1910, commissioned by the wealthy Pere Milà, who wanted to create an elegant residence for his family as well as office space.

The building’s unusual, flowing stone facade resembles a natural rock formation with its irregular shapes and organic lines. This is where the name La Pedrera, meaning “The Quarry”, comes from. Gaudí combined functionality with artistic vision, creating a space inspired by forms found in nature.

During your visit, you will step inside interiors that reveal how the architect worked with light, space and intricate details. You will see the 1911 Apartment, which recreates the lifestyle of Barcelona’s bourgeoisie at the beginning of the 20th century, as well as the attic with 270 brick arches, home to an exhibition dedicated to Gaudí’s life and work.

Make sure to visit the Butterfly Courtyard and the Flower Courtyard, where colourful decorations, murals and organic forms reflect Gaudí’s approach, in which architecture also becomes a form of artistic expression.

You will also have the opportunity to access the rooftop, where extraordinary chimneys and sculptural forms covered with trencadís mosaic create a unique landscape overlooking Barcelona.

Casa Milà demonstrates how Gaudí pushed the boundaries of traditional architecture, creating a building filled with organic shapes and unconventional solutions.
