Program Description

Just outside Barcelona lies Colònia Güell, a former industrial colony where Antoni Gaudí experimented with his innovative architectural ideas. This is where he created Gaudí's Crypt, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. During a guided tour, you'll explore the architect's unusual designs and learn about the history of a community once home to textile factory workers.

Your visit begins at the Visitor Centre, where a permanent exhibition spread across two floors tells the story of the colony and the construction of the crypt. You'll hear how entrepreneur Eusebi Güell commissioned Gaudí to design a church for the local community, giving him complete creative freedom and an unlimited budget.

Next, your guide will take you to Gaudí's Crypt, originally intended to form part of a much larger church. Here, you can admire its unusual columns, arches and architectural details, which reflect the architect's experimental approach. It was in this very place that Gaudí developed techniques he would later use in his other projects.

A walk through the streets of Colònia Güell also offers a glimpse into life in this former workers' colony. Among the historic buildings, you'll find examples of Catalan Modernist architecture that reflect the area's industrial heritage.

The order of visits and the programme are subject to change.
