Program Description
Before Antoni Gaudí began working on his most famous projects, he experimented with innovative techniques that would later transform architecture. You can see the results of these experiments at Gaudí's Crypt in Colònia Güell, located just outside Barcelona. This unfinished church, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers an insight into the ideas Gaudí would later apply to the construction of the Sagrada Família.
The crypt was commissioned by Eusebi Güell, the owner of a 19th-century textile colony. It was originally intended to form part of a church for factory workers and their families. Gaudí used the project as an opportunity to test new structural techniques, combining unusual shapes, materials and construction methods.
With a multilingual audioguide, you'll learn about the church's history and the architectural experiments behind its design. Inside, sloping columns, irregular arches and original decorative details create an interior unlike that of a traditional church. You'll also find out why the building was never completed and how the project influenced Gaudí's later work.
A visit to Gaudí's Crypt in Colònia Güell offers a different perspective on the famous architect's legacy, revealing an important stage in the development of his distinctive style.
The order of visits and the programme are subject to change.
